Panicking patients and how to calm them

This is a subject that is very important if you want to be a good dentist. First of all, you need to be a good psychologist if you want to be in this line of work. A lot of people are afraid of dentists for a reason. First of all, you are not happy when you see a lot of shiny and pointy instruments that are coming near your mouth. Second of all, when you see a drill that is going to drill your teeth, you won’t feel good. The thing is, people are afraid of pain, and that is the real reason. People are afraid of needles because they know that poking their skin will hurt. It is too damn scary. And now imagine the situation when they know that a needle is used for administering local anesthesia. That is scary.

Solutions

You can calm down because you won’t have to tie up your patients to a chair. There are better methods for this. First of all, the most important thing is to talk calmly to a patient. They will be scared, and of course, they won’t admit it. It is a normal thing. You just need to understand that they will be really scared. The first method is to explain the procedure and what will happen calmly. It is a good idea to show the instrument. The most important thing is always to repeat that they won’t feel anything and that pain won’t be an issue. You need to tell them that there will be some buzzing and drilling but that is a small thing. When you explain the holes that you will drill, you should always point out that they are really small and that you will be over shortly.

Last options

If you see that they are panicking and that they can’t calm down, you could always give them some medication to calm them down, and of course, total anesthesia is always the last option. Some of them will ask for a total anesthesia which you will have to administer. All in all, you have a lot of options for this kind of people.
